Rhönbasalt

(Rhoen basalt: Development - digging - geotopes) by Hans Dieter Nuedling
Rhoenbasalt is well known even beyond the boundaries of Rhoen. It represents the landscape of the Rhoen with its knolls and plateaus, the pentagonal and hexagonal columns that one can find in some places, and not least a building material of highest quality that has been mined in the Rhoen for over one hundred years.  Rhoenbasalt formed about 11 millions years ago when the Rhoen was volcanic and basaltic lava broke through the 230 million year old layers of sandstone and shell limestone.
